Principled Technologies conducted hands-on transactional database testing of two current-generation VMware vSAN™ ReadyNode™ clusters: one equipped with three single-socket Dell EMC™ PowerEdge™ R7515 servers powered by AMD EPYC™ 7502P processors, and the other outfitted with three dual-socket HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 servers powered by Intel® Xeon® Gold 6240 processors. To serve as a baseline reference, we also tested a VMware vSAN cluster composed of three five-year-old HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen9 servers powered by Intel Xeon E5-2680 v3 processors. We measured the performance of the clusters using Microsoft SQL Server 2017 and the DVD Store version 3 benchmark, which targets a transactional database and produces a metric of orders per minute. We calculated costs for the clusters of current-generation systems using list pricing for hardware and four-year licensing and support for the following software products: Microsoft Windows Server 2019 Datacenter, Microsoft SQL Server 2017 Enterprise, VMware vSphere™ 6.7U3 Enterprise Plus, and VMware vSAN Enterprise. For the two Microsoft products, we chose versions that support unlimited virtualization per server and are optimized for maximum performance. For the two VMware products, we chose versions that offer advanced performance and resource management features that most enterprises use. Software costs for the two current-generation clusters differed due to the varying number of sockets and cores in each server
