
Headed into 2020, manufacturers and consumer packaged goods ( CPG) brands prioritized smart factories and industry 4.0 as their t op strategic big bets. The promise of financial, operational, and technology transformation was too good to resist. IoT sensors would connect everything; AI and machine learning would enable constant process improvement; factory floors would be retooled with advanced robotics; and workers would interact with wearables and augmented reality to enable better decision making. And then, of course , everything changed. In 2020, manufacturing and CPG companies significantly increase d remote work ; reduced onsite, in-person interactions; and experienced pervasive inventory shortages. These challenges, as well as others, have jeopardized one of t he most critical components of t he supply chain: maintenance.
